In this interactive online session, we demystify how digital weather models process atmospheric data, why forecast screens seem to fail near coastlines and mountains, and how to combine traditional seamanship with screen data to make confident, safe calls on the water.
Whether you sail on Lake Zug, windsurf, or plan offshore charters, this workshop will give you a clear framework for reading weather data without getting overwhelmed by screens.
What We Will Cover
1. How We Used to Forecast (And Why It Still Matters)
- The fundamentals of synoptic meteorology: high/low-pressure systems, cold/warm fronts, and isobar gradients.
- Reading synoptic weather charts before screens existed—and why tracking barometric pressure trends onboard remains your ultimate real-time early warning system.
2. Inside the Digital Weather App
- What apps like Windy actually display vs. what people think they display.
- Understanding the difference between sustained ground wind (a 10-minute averaged mathematical vector 10m above water) and peak gusts (3-second localised spikes).
- The 3 Workflows: How my weather routing changes completely depending on where we are sailing:
- Lake Zug: Why global apps struggle with our local topography and how to read the Bise and Föhn.
- The Mediterranean: Tracking convective squalls, sea breezes, and reading the warning signs of a Bora or Jugo.
- The Atlantic: How we rely on synoptic fronts and larger weather systems.
