Our Philosophy: Real World Mastery Over Rigid Certification

The Confidence Gap: Why Licenses and Gear Aren’t Enough

In Central Europe, we are conditioned to believe that structure, gear, and certification equal capability. We study hard for certificates like the Swiss D-Schein, Hochseeschein, the German SKS, or the RYA Yachtmaster, buy the best windsurfing or wingfoiling gear, or invest in our own beautiful boats.

But the water does not care about paperwork or price tags.

Every year, thousands of capable professionals feel a quiet, private anxiety when it’s time to actually perform. They hold valid licenses but are quietly nervous about leaving the dock. They have the best windsurfing gear but get frustrated by rigid, old-school instructors who shout from the shoreline.

At All Winds Adventures, we explicitly do not coach for tests. We offer premium sailing coaching in Switzerland designed for real-world, intuitive mastery

The Competence Shift: From the Wild Irish Coast to Switzerland

We came from an environment where forced competence is essential, and there is no requirement for certification for pleasure craft under 24m. Despite this, a certain level of experience or competence is required to maximise safety when your formative playgrounds are the South and West coasts of Ireland.

At All Winds Adventures, we explicitly do not coach for tests. We coach for real-world, intuitive mastery. Whether you are stepping onto a windsurf board for the first time on a Swiss lake or skippering a 45-foot yacht on the open sea, we bridge the gap between knowing the theory and feeling completely in control.

The Origin: “There is Nobody Who Can’t Learn”

This perspective wasn’t formed in a classroom. It was forged over almost 40 years of operating on the raw and wild coasts of Ireland, the wave-shaped shores of Maui, Hawaii and the lakes and mountains of Switzerland.

During my very first sailing instructor course back in the early ’90s, the Instructor Trainer stood before a room of young and impressionable soon-to-be instructors and asked a simple question:

“Who shouldn’t learn to sail?”

In our naivety, we immediately started listing groups based on our own biases—people with physical limitations, cognitive challenges, or those who simply started too late in life. The trainer wrote every response on a giant flip chart. He stepped back, looked at the list for a moment, and then did something that very early but also permanently redefined my approach to coaching.

He ripped the pages off the board, tore them to pieces, threw them in the trash, and said, “There is nobody who cannot or shouldn’t master the water. It is our job as coaches to dismantle the obstacles and make it possible.”

Years later, on my powerboat instructor training, that philosophy was put to the test. We were challenged to do the RYA Powerboat Level 2 Exam (the same as the Swiss A-Schein or German SBF See) in the notorious tides of the Menai Straits (up to 9 knots in springs!)—completely blindfolded. We weren’t asked to do it to show off or test our own skills; we were doing it to build radical empathy with people who faced such challenges and also to experience what it might be like to teach them.

That adaptive, obstacle-removing mindset is the DNA of every single thing we teach.

The Full Circle: The Roots of Swiss Alpine Adventure

If this philosophy of breaking down barriers, removing elitism, and coaching with empathy sounds familiar to long-time expats and outdoor enthusiasts in Switzerland, it is because it has a deep history here.

This exact mindset is the core engine that originally spawned Swiss Alpine Adventure.

Years ago, we looked at the Swiss Alps and realised they were distinct challenges for newcomers to safely gain experience in the mountains or find the best spots to go to. We set out to change that, building a massive, inclusive community around the belief that anyone could master the mountains if they just stripped away the ego and were provided with safe, methodical, and balanced guidance. Over the years, we ran more than 1500 events for more than 3000 regular members.

With All Winds Adventures, we are going right back to our roots.

We are taking that same proven, community-first, obstacle-removing DNA that opened up the Swiss Alps for so many people and applying it to the water.

We are stripping the elitism, the judgment, and the fear out of water sports. If you want to know more about the specific coaching framework Karin and I use to make this happen, you can read more about our backgrounds and experience here.

The Toolbox Concept

We see skills as tools. When you go to a traditional school whose sole intent is to help you pass a rigid regulatory exam, they will give you a hammer. This hammer is the only tool they offer, meant to be used in all situations where something vaguely looks like a nail.

We want to help you see that while the hammer is perfect for a nail, a dynamic environment often requires a screwdriver, a wrench, or a rivet gun.

We will show you exactly when the hammer is the optimal tool and clarify the distinct advantages and disadvantages of trying to use it in every situation. This is not to make things more complicated—quite the contrary. It ensures that as you gain experience and see a wider range of changing conditions, you have the right mental tools in your personal toolbox to adapt, pivot, and confidently rise to the challenge.

How We Apply This Across the Water

Sailing, windsurfing, and powerboating are not sports of brute force, ego, or loud voices. They are elegant puzzles of physics, leverage, biomechanics, and calm preparation. Because we view the water through this highly analytical lens, we have completely discarded the traditional, high-stress coaching archetypes.

Quiet Confidence

High volume always covers up a lack of planning. We teach through calm, deliberate briefings before a single line is pulled or a sail is lifted. If a manoeuvre fails, we treat it as data, not a personal flaw. We loop around, analyse the physical variables, and select a different tool from the box.

Empathy

We completely adapt the technical terminology, boat physics, and physical mechanics to match your body type, your primary language (fluent English or German), and your analytical mindset.

Privacy

Whether you are booking a highly targeted private session on your own boat on a Swiss lake or joining our elite coaching weeks on the coastal waters of the Adriatic, your privacy, dignity, and peace of mind are fiercely protected.

Is This the Right Fit for You?

Let’s Find Your Path

Because we tailor everything directly to the individual—whether we are structuring a bespoke session on your own vessel, a weekend windsurfing clinic, or limiting our premium Adriatic masterclasses to just five guests with guaranteed private cabins—we always start with a low-pressure conversation.
Let’s have a brief, calm chat to discuss exactly where you are, where you want to go, and how we can make the water work for you.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
How is All Winds Adventures different from a standard Swiss sailing school?

Standard schools are built for a single purpose: training you to pass a structured, rigid exam route to get a license (like the D-Schein, A-Schein or Hochseeschein). They focus heavily on memorising rules for a test. We focus entirely on what happens after you get the license—building intuitive situational mastery, handling real-world wind shifts, stress-free boat management, and removing the underlying anxiety that rigid test-prep environments often create. Of course, our experiences can also be used to help you work towards a license, as confident skills are always going to stand to you in any environment.

Do I need prior experience or certifications to book coaching with you?

Absolutely not. Our founding philosophy is that anyone can master the water. We coach all levels—from complete novices trying windsurfing or foiling for the first time, to seasoned boat owners and Hochseeschein holders who want to refine their technical skills quietly without judgment.

Can you coach me on my own boat in Switzerland?

Yes. Our One-on-One Own-Boat Coaching is highly sought after by professionals and expats. We come directly to your boat as collaborative peers. We analyse your specific deck layout, optimise your rigging, and teach you and your partner how to handle your specific vessel smoothly, quietly, and effortlessly in your home marina.

What languages are the coaching sessions conducted in?

All coaching, briefings, and materials are available fully in both English and German. We adapt our terminology completely to what makes you feel most comfortable and secure.

Can you coach me for my Swiss A-Permit (Motor) or D-Schein (Sailing)?

The fundamental physics, boat-handling mechanics, and practical manoeuvres required for the Swiss D-Schein and A-Permit run completely parallel to the RYA Sailing Level 2 and Powerboat Level 2 frameworks—courses Dave has taught extensively in his RYA years.
Our coaching ensures you build deep, intuitive mastery from your very first hour, meaning you learn faster and without stress. However, because Swiss examiners often look for highly specific local nuances, we actually recommend taking one or two final sessions with a school operating directly out of your exact exam location. This allows you to get comfortable on the specific school boat you will test on and master the precise idiosyncrasies of the local examiner before test day.

Can I use an RYA Day Skipper license in Switzerland?

Legally, no—not if you live here. The RYA Day Skipper is an open-sea (tidal) qualification, whereas Swiss lakes are governed by strict inland waterways regulations.

If you are a non-resident tourist, you can operate a boat using an ICC (International Certificate of Competence) validated for Inland Waters (which requires passing the CEVNI exam). However, the moment you register as a Swiss resident, the clock starts ticking. You are required to obtain the official Swiss D-Schein (sailing) or A-Permit (motor). Our coaching bridges this transition perfectly, taking your existing sea experience and translating it to the unique wind patterns and docking realities of Swiss alpine lakes.

Can you do the Swiss Exams in English?

Yes. Because maritime licensing in Switzerland is managed at the cantonal level, rules vary by location, but the options for English speakers are expanding. Currently, you can take the theoretical exam in English in several key cantons, including Zug and Schwyz.

We conduct our practical coaching primarily in English to ensure you can master complex physics, boat mechanics, and safety maneuvers without having to translate technical terms in your head. However, we can also seamlessly deliver your coaching entirely in German.

In fact, despite his extensive international background, Dave personally took both his Swiss A-Permit and D-Schein examinations in German. He knows exactly what the local examiners are looking for, the precise linguistic nuances they expect, and how to navigate the practical test with absolute confidence regardless of the language.ter the local German nautical terminology from day one, we’ve got you covered. (Dave took his A and D certifications in German.)
