“Anyone can hold the helm when the sea is calm.” — Publilius Syrus
But what happens when the spinnaker is in the water, the engine has stopped, and the wind is picking up?
Join All Winds Adventures for a crucial theory session on Catastrophe Management at sea. While we all prefer fair winds and following seas, the difference between a rough day and a disaster often comes down to preparation, mindset, and how we react in the first few moments of a crisis.
What We Will Cover: Catastrophe Management at Sea
This session focuses on the philosophy that prevention is better than cure, but it also equips you with the tools to handle situations when prevention fails.
- The Chain of Disaster: How to spot the small mistakes that lead to big problems and how to break the chain before it escalates.
- The “Reset Button”: Why doing nothing for 10 seconds can save the boat. How to stop, calm down, and assess before acting.
- Specific Scenarios:
- We will discuss real-life examples of catastrophe management at sea to help you prepare
- Spinnaker troubles (trawling, broaching, and overpowering).
- Propeller wraps and engine failure.
- Getting caught in weather beyond your comfort zone.
- The Hierarchy of Safety: Prioritising People over Gear.
We Want Your Input!
This isn’t just a lecture; it’s a workshop. Do you have a specific fear or a “What if?” scenario? Maybe you’ve had a near-miss in the past? We invite you to send us your scenarios or questions in advance. We will select a few to analyse during the session (anonymously if you prefer!) to discuss how to deal with them safely.
Whether you are a skipper, a crew member, or a windsurfer venturing further offshore, this session is about building the confidence to handle the unexpected.
