Anchoring with Confidence: Ground Tackle Dynamics & The Shore-Tying Toolbox

Dropping an anchor should be one of the most relaxing parts of sailing—not a stressful guess. Holding power isn’t about luck; it comes down to understanding basic physics, reading the seabed, and selecting the right technique for the bay you are in.

In this live online workshop, we start with the core dynamics of ground tackle—how anchors actually grip, how scope works, and how to relieve load on your boat. Once those foundations are solid, we look at practical additions for your sailing toolbox, including stern shore-tying in tight coves and managing wind shifts.

What We Will Cover

  • Ground Tackle & Scope Mechanics: Catenary effect, chain vs. rode dynamics, seabed types, and calculating true scope based on tide, depth, and freeboard.
  • Snubbers & Load Relief: Why hanging your boat on the windlass gypsy is a costly mistake and how to properly rig bridle snubbers.
  • Shore Tying (Mediterranean & Croatia Style): How to safely run stern lines to trees or rocks, manage onshore swells, and drop a clean bow anchor on the approach.
  • Managing Limited Space: Setting dual anchors or a Bahamian moor to limit your swinging circle in narrow coves or withstand major wind shifts.
  • Night Peace of Mind: Dealing with fouled anchors, setting smart anchor drag alarms, and handling a dragging situation smoothly and calmly.
