You passed your exam, you booked the charter, and suddenly, you are the captain. Now what?

Sailing schools give you scaffolding. Your peers share your experience level, the boat is perfectly prepared, and an instructor is always there to catch the pieces if things go wrong.

But the moment you step onto a charter yacht as the designated skipper, that safety net disappears. You are the ultimate authority, often managing a crew with far less training than the teams you trained with.

Navigating the human element on board is just as critical as reading the chartplotter. Here is how to map your crew dynamics so your first independent voyages don’t turn into high-stress trials.

The Confidence Cycle: The Dunning-Kruger Effect

When you first pass an exam (Day Skipper, Hochseeschein, or SKS), it is easy to mistake a piece of paper for absolute capability. In reality, a certificate is simply an invitation to begin true, experiential learning.

This cycle resets in iterations throughout your sailing career:

• You master lake dinghies, then feel like a beginner again on a coaching yacht.
• You master coastal island-hopping, then face a new learning curve going offshore.

Expect these resets. A good skipper accepts that they are starting a process, not finishing one.

1. Inexperienced Friends: Managing the “Oracle” Illusion

Non-sailing friends will automatically assume your new qualification makes you an all-knowing master of the sea.

• The Risk: You either overcompensate with false certainty or internalise the stress silently.
• The Strategy: Clear the air before leaving the dock. Assign simple, non-technical jobs, manage expectations early, and deliberately sail well within your comfort zone while building miles.

2. Experienced Friends: Sorting Advice from Stress

Sailing with experienced peers offers great support, but it introduces a different cognitive friction. There are as many ways to handle a line or drop an anchor as there are sailors on the water.

• The Risk: Getting sidetracked or stressed by a crew member questioning your workflow.
• The Strategy: As skipper, you must use the method that keeps you calm. Process their input, use their muscle power, but maintain a firm boundary regarding your personal stress limits.

3. The Inexperienced Partner: Balancing Roles

The dream of sailing into the sunset together can easily turn into a relationship strain if the communication dynamic breaks down on deck. Until you function as an intuitive team, you must be capable of single-handing the vessel while delivering calm, concise directions.

Notes from the Logbook: We recently watched this go wrong in a crowded anchorage. A boat began dragging its anchor in a sudden blow. The female partner was on the bow wrestling a malfunctioning windlass in total panic.

The male skipper remained surgically attached to the helm, burning out his bow thruster and shouting orders. Because he lacked the boat-handling confidence to temporarily leave the wheel and assist her on the foredeck, the situation escalated into a toxic shouting match.

Avoid rigid stereotypes. Take progressive baby steps, learn to share roles flexibly, and ensure you are both building functional competence before you face demanding conditions.

4. The Experienced Partner: Safe Progression

This is one of the strongest configurations for a new skipper. You have an established baseline of personal trust paired with a reliable sounding board on deck.

• The Strategy: Keep your initial challenges modest. Focus on how you communicate as an independent, shorthanded team, and use their presence to steadily expand your operational limits.

5. The Family Crew: High Emotional Stakes

Taking your immediate family out can be the most intimidating configuration of all. You hold absolute responsibility for the people who matter most to you; they are usually inexperienced, and you have zero professional backup.

• The Strategy: Keep trips short, conservative, and comfortable. Plan light-wind or downwind coastal legs to build their confidence, and focus on keeping the experience enjoyable rather than highly technical.

6. A Group of Strangers: Avoid Early On

Stepping onto a vessel with a crew you do not know is highly discouraged for your first few independent commands.

• The Risk: You cannot verify their true capability, their communication habits, or how they react to pressure. A bad suggestion from an unverified stranger can easily become the first link in an accident chain. Learn to manage friends and family first.

Analysing the aftermath of the Splitska Vrata collision is essential for any skipper who wants to practice true defensive seamanship. On June 14th, 2026, a devastating accident occurred near the Split Gates (Splitska Vrata) between the islands of Šolta and Brač. Heartbreakingly, this event resulted in the deaths of four people.

The accident left a deep mark on our team and prompted an immediate evaluation of our own onboard routines. This reflection is personal. We passed through that exact area shortly after the incident occurred. On that same day, we heard the DSC notifications and the subsequent, quite unstructured radio traffic from Split Radio. Within a 20-mile radius, we navigated our own crossing with a high-speed ferry and experienced a close shave with a sailing catamaran.

Disclaimer: This analysis is written strictly from our perspective as active sailing coaches, charter yacht owners, and mariners with nearly 40 years of experience on the water. We are not professional Marine Accident Investigators. These observations represent our technical assumptions, with the sole goal of fostering a proactive, no-blame safety culture across the sailing community.

Reconstructing the Collision Angles

Local maritime reports have not yet explicitly defined the exact angle of approach. However, a careful reading of the surviving skipper’s interview published by the Croatian maritime outlet Morski.hr allows us to attempt to make a reliable technical assumption.

An analysis of the aftermath photograph strongly supports this view. The image shows the stern of the sailing yacht—a Beneteau Oceanis 46.1—trapped directly under the starboard bow of the catamaran. The yacht lay at a perpendicular angle to the catamaran’s direction of travel, with its mast and sails submerged in the water.

Furthermore, the skipper noted in his interview that he was sitting at the port helm. He was looking across the cockpit centreline when he first spotted the catamaran. Because the sailboat’s starboard helm and starboard aft cabin sustained the direct, catastrophic force of the impact, a clear picture emerges. The catamaran most likely approached from the sailboat’s starboard stern quarter.

The Reality of High-Speed Crossings

During the approach, the charter crew was unaware that the commercial catamaran was travelling at 32 knots. They simply realised that the vessel was moving extremely fast. Consequently, they had very little time to plan an escape route.

The crew ultimately realised the catamaran was not altering its course when it was roughly 500 metres away. At a speed of 32 knots, a distance of 500 metres leaves a closing window of approximately 30 seconds before impact. We do not know if the charter yacht was actively monitoring an AIS receiver. However, we can verify via tracking data that the high-speed catamaran was actively transmitting, as its track was visible on Vessel Finder.

Crucially, an Automatic Identification System (AIS) is an essential electronic tool when used correctly. We request that the AIS transceiver on All Winds remains fully operational at all times. If you ever charter our vessel and find the system offline, you must contact our base and us directly immediately.

Evasive Manoeuvres and Alternative Tactics

When the charter crew determined that the catamaran would not give way, they turned to starboard. They were bearing away in an effort to take evasive action. While this choice was an instinctive attempt to escape, turning to starboard away from a vessel approaching your starboard quarter is highly disadvantageous.

In fact, under the collision regulations for restricted visibility, skippers are explicitly told to avoid a turn to starboard when a vessel approaches from the starboard quarter. Even though this specific tragedy happened in clear daylight, the geometric logic remains completely sound. A starboard turn inadvertently puts you into the path of the approaching vessel.

Second, turning downwind into a light 5-knot breeze instantly drops your apparent wind speed. Consequently, the yacht loses its effective sail power and slows down exactly when it needs acceleration.

The Myth of “Right of Way”

There is no such thing as “right of way” in the international collision rules. Instead, the rules divide responsibility between two specific roles: the vessel obligated to maintain course and speed to remain predictable [Stand-on Vessel], and the vessel obligated to give way and steer clear [Give-way vessel].

Being the vessel required to hold your course is not a privilege or a legal green light. It is a strict obligation to stay at your current course and speed so the other boat can safely calculate its avoidance maneuver. The rules state that you must only alter your course when it becomes absolutely obvious that the give-way vessel is failing to take action. In a high-speed encounter, holding that predictability while a wall of steel charges at you takes immense psychological nerve—but changing course too early can create a catastrophic misunderstanding on the other ship’s bridge.

The Port Turn and Propulsion Alternatives

The skipper stated in his interview that turning to port would not have left them enough time to change the genoa. From a technical standpoint, however, a complete sail change was not required.

The crew could have chosen to tack directly into a heave-to position. Leaving the genoa backed to port would instantly stall the boat’s forward momentum. This dynamic stall might have been enough to let the faster vessel pass safely astern.

Simultaneously, a sudden burst of forward engine power could have pushed the stern out of the danger zone. Most modern cruising yachts utilise common-rail diesel engines. These usually take about 3 to 5 seconds to start. Therefore, there is no need to wait for old glow-plug cycles or warm-up alarms.

Hindsight vs. Crisis Reality

We want to extend our deepest, most heartfelt sympathies to the skipper, the surviving crew, and the families who lost their loved ones. We apportion absolutely zero blame to the crew of the yacht. I don’t know of anyone who could, hand on heart, 100% say they without a doubt would have done anything different faced with the same circumstances.

While it is educationally valuable to analyse these manoeuvres from a technical standpoint, we must acknowledge a critical reality. We are doing so with the immense luxury of complete hindsight. Facing a massive commercial vessel bearing down at 32 knots is a terrifying experience.

In a sudden, split-second crisis (in extremis), human panic is entirely real. Under extreme stress, the human brain naturally defaults to basic survival instincts. Anyone who sits back in an armchair and claims they would have handled this perfectly is occupying a very dangerous space on the Dunning-Kruger curve.

Navigating Traffic Density and License Ignorance

The summer waters of the Adriatic are a crowded powder keg. Many holiday charterers lack practical sea time. Consequently, they mistakenly bring basic road-driving or motorboat assumptions onto a sailing boat.

For instance, in October 2025, we were test-sailing All Winds through the Split Gates while beating upwind on a starboard tack. Simultaneously, another sailboat was running downwind under its jib alone on the exact same tack. Under international sailing rules (COLREG Rule 12(a)(ii)), the windward boat must keep clear of the leeward boat.

Therefore, we were legally the stand-on vessel. Yet, as we actively took evasive action to prevent a collision, the other crew began shouting at us. They aggressively claimed they had the right-of-way because they were “coming from the right”. They were incorrectly applying basic motorboat crossing rules to a clear sailing situation.

Learning from Our Own Weaknesses

It is easy to point fingers at commercial crews of high-speed ferries or holiday charterers. However, the hardest part of genuine seamanship is looking directly in the mirror. None of us are perfect.

On that very Sunday, June 14th, 2026, I was on All Winds just 20 miles away from the accident. Earlier that morning, we had departed Lovište under perfect champagne sailing conditions, flying our Gennaker. Soon after leaving, a high-speed ferry approached from our port side.

I held our course and carefully monitored his trajectory as we were legally the stand-on vessel. He eventually altered his course by a few degrees to pass close astern. Because we identified him early, we had the luxury of time to evaluate the situation safely. Shortly after this encounter, we heard the DSC distress alert and some unstructured voice transmissions from Split Radio. Having been involved in real Mayday operations in the past, I noted that nothing suggested a major accident, and I mistakenly assumed it was a false alarm.

The Danger of Blind Spots

Shortly afterwards, the wind died completely while we were motoring between Šćedro and the Paklinski islands. I engaged the autopilot, scanned the horizon for traffic, and noted a single vessel far ahead that posed no threat. I then left the helm for a brief moment.

During those few minutes, I completely missed a large charter catamaran approaching from our starboard side. Ironically, it was flying a massive Swiss flag. When it suddenly passed close astern, I could not tell you if they had to alter their course to avoid us or not! In that crossing situation, we were clearly the give-way vessel.

After cruising through uncrowded waters for months, this was a severe wake-up call. Croatia features immense maritime traffic, and a simple few minutes’ human lapse is all it takes to create a potentially catastrophic blind spot. At 30 knots, a fast vessel covers a full nautical mile in just 120 seconds.

Designing Habits for Safer Seamanship

Developing a defensive mindset on the water does not mean operating like an infallible computer. We are humans. We experience fatigue, suffer from distractions, and possess clear physical limits. To protect our crews and vessels from our own biological weaknesses, we must design watchkeeping routines.

Out of this profound tragedy, our goal is to highlight how the sailing community can protect itself by reducing watchkeeping to two simple habits:

• Scan Frequently and Completely: Actively scan 360 degrees around your vessel, checking your blind spots far more frequently than you think is necessary. Never assume that a clear horizon will remain clear for more than a few minutes.
• Formally Appoint a Spotter: If you are cooking, analysing a chartplotter, or dealing with a sail that completely blocks your forward vision, explicitly assign a crew member to monitor your blind spots.

True seamanship is not about pretending you never make mistakes. Instead, it is about recognising your vulnerabilities, learning from those close shaves, and building those lessons directly back into your deck routines. We cannot guarantee perfect safety on the water, but by shifting our focus toward the human factors that drive risk, we can actively minimise our exposure to danger.

If you spend enough time around marinas, you will inevitably hear someone preaching absolute rules. “Always tie your bowline with the tail inside.” “Never put two lines on the same cleat.” “Always secure the windward mooring line first.”

In sailing schools, beginners are taught these strict, black-and-white rules because they need scaffolding. When you are just starting out, a rigid script keeps you safe. But as you gain experience, you realise an uncomfortable truth: The wind does not read the textbook.

I grew up navigating the complex tides and unpredictable weather of Ireland’s Fastnet coast, and recently went through the grinder of upgrading to an RYA Yachtmaster Commercial Endorsement. When you are put under that kind of professional pressure, you are forced to re-examine every habit you have.

The biggest takeaway? Out on the water, “always” and “never” will eventually get you into trouble. The best sailors don’t just follow a script—they read the environment, sense the rhythm of the boat, and adapt to reality.

Here is why practical seamanship means building a toolbox of options, rather than memorising a list of rules.

1. The Bowline Debate: Choose a tail layout for your application

Ask a number of sailors how to tie a bowline, and you’ll get multiple answers. People will fiercely argue whether the tail should finish inside the loop (for neatness) or outside the loop (so it doesn’t snag).

Here is the reality: Neither is wrong. Both hold the boat. If you are screaming at your crew because they tied a secure, load-bearing bowline with the tail on the “wrong” side during a 30-knot squall, you are missing the point of seamanship. The goal isn’t textbook perfection; the goal is a secure vessel. Learn both methods so you have options, but prioritise competence over aesthetics.

2. The Med Mooring “Rule” (And When to Break It)

There is a classic rule for stern-to Mediterranean mooring in a crosswind: “Always pick up the windward line first to hold the bow against the breeze.” 90% of the time, that is exactly what you should do. But what if the crosswind is howling at 25 knots? What if you are driving a clunky long keel boat with no bow thruster, and you know for an absolute fact that the wind is going to blow your bow onto the neighbouring yacht before your crew can tension that windward line?

In that exact moment, an adaptable skipper throws the textbook out the window. They might deliberately choose the leeward line first. By loading the leeward side of the boat with every fender you own and using the leeward slime line to control your drift, you can lean gently and safely into the neighbour’s boat while you sort yourself out.

Is it the “textbook” way? No. Is it the safe, seamanlike way to control the chaos in that specific moment? Absolutely. We learned this the hard way, trying to stay off another boat when docking shorthanded with quite a strong wind on the windward bow. I realised that instead of fighting the wind to keep us off a neighbouring boat and risking damaging it if I lost control, I could use the opposite line to rest against it in control and also have the advantage that the windward mooring line could safely be pulled up without the risk of us getting blown over it! win/win and a lot less stress when docking on All Winds.

3. Eyes Out, Not Down

Modern chartplotters and wind instruments are brilliant tools, but they lag behind reality. You cannot sail a boat purely by the numbers on a screen.

The true skill of a sailor, windsurfer, or winger lies in feeling the wind before the digital dials register it. You feel it in the lift of the sail, the balance under your feet, and the faint shift of pressure against your cheek. You see it in the dark ripples of a gust moving across the water toward your bow.

Keep your head out of the boat. Use your senses first to anticipate the environment, and then glance down at your instruments to confirm what you already know.

4. Bowline on a Cleat

There is a common warning repeated around marinas: “Never put a bowline on a cleat, because if the line gets jammed when slipping, you’ll have to cut it.” While there is a grain of truth to the warning regarding bad line management, discarding the setup entirely means you miss out on a very clean, practical layout.

When rigging a slip line for departure, using a bowline actually gives you an exceptionally tidy deck. You can tie a bowline with a large loop, pass that loop right through the centre opening of your boat’s deck cleat, and ensure the loop is big enough that the actual knot sits well away from the cleat and completely clear of the hull. From there, run the line out around the dock bollard, and bring it straight back to a standard cleat hitch on that exact same cleat on your deck.

This leaves your cleat completely organised and easy to manage short-handed. Yes, there is a minor risk that a line could get stuck in an absolute emergency, meaning you would have to cut the bowline side. But with good rope handling and proper preparation before departure, that risk is almost entirely negated, and you are left with a tidier, easier setup on the boat.

On “All Winds”, we unashamedly tend to go for a bowline, around the bollard and back to the cleat for a cleat hitch, but if we suspect we will have a problem in advance, we may revert to two cleat hitches. We are not stuck to one method, we have both in our toolbox and pull out the one that is best for the current situation.

The One Exception: Safety is Black and White

There is only one exception to our flexible “it depends” philosophy: Safety.

Safety is not a choice. If a knot slips under load, it’s wrong. If a manoeuvre injures your crew or damages the vessel, it’s wrong. Even the highest levels of RYA examination align with this. They don’t mandate a single, rigid “Man Overboard” manoeuvre; they simply require you to get the person back to the boat quickly and safely. The method is entirely up to the skipper’s judgment of the current conditions.

We adapt the method, but we never compromise the standard.

If you’re planning a yacht charter in Croatia, you’re probably dreaming of 15 knots of steady Maestral wind, flat seas, and cold beers at anchor. And 90% of the time, that’s exactly what you get.

But then there is the Nevera (or Neverin).

If you learned to sail in the UK or Northern Europe, you know about cold fronts. A Nevera is Dalmatia’s highly localised, violently explosive version of that. It’s a summer thermal thunderstorm that lasts maybe 15 to 45 minutes, but the peak intensity is staggering. We are talking about wind jumping from zero to 50+ knots in less than five minutes, accompanied by a 10-degree temperature plunge, horizontal rain, and occasional hail.

Local guidebooks often tell charterers to “watch out for dark clouds in the west.” In practice, waiting until the dark clouds are visible on the western horizon means your preparation window has already closed.

1. How to Predict Dangerous Weather when Sailing in Croatia (Before the Clouds Form)

You cannot predict a Nevera by looking at the sky in the morning. You need to look at the raw data a day in advance using apps like Windy and DHMZ (the Croatian Meteorological site).

• Look for the “Barometric Swamp”: A Nevera loves a stagnant, sweltering weather map. If the pressure is high (1020+ hPa), with the normal thermal winds in the afternoon, you’re usually fine—that high pressure acts as an invisible lid, suppressing storms. But if you have a “flat gradient” with lower pressure (around 1010 hPa), that lid is gone. The sun bakes the sea, the humidity spikes, the atmosphere turns into a pressure cooker, and the air can feel exceptionally heavy, clammy, and difficult to breathe.
• Check the CAPE Index: On Windy, turn on the CAPE (Convective Available Potential Energy) layer. This is the explosive fuel in the atmosphere. If it’s a windless, 35°C day and you see a CAPE forecast of 1500+ J/kg (or especially >2200 J/kg) in your general area, you might be sitting on a loaded spring.
• The Spark: The final trigger is usually a distant, weak low-pressure system rolling over the Alps, or the mountains of the coast themselves. Anything that sends a ripple of cold air high above the Adriatic’s hot “swamp.” When those air masses meet, the hot air violently shoots upward, creating a massive surface vacuum that sucks in a 50-knot gust front. If there is any kind of temperature change (also in the higher atmosphere then this can lead to the high potential energy in the CAPE being released. Remember CAPE is not the likelihood of a storm occurring; it’s how much energy it might have if it does occur.

2. Evasion: Plan to Shelter Early

The absolute best way to survive a Nevera is to be tied up when it hits. If your weather app shows high CAPE, a flat gradient, and a thunderstorm risk, do not wait to see what happens. Change your itinerary. Aim to be securely anchored or on a secure mooring buoy or, better still, in a sheltered marina by 3:00 PM.

• Hide on the East: Neveras almost universally strike from the West, Northwest, or Southwest (rolling off the Italian coast). Avoid anchoring on the exposed western shores of the islands. You want deep bays on the eastern or northern shores where high island peaks to your West will physically break the wind.
• Holding is Everything: In 50 knots of wind, mud and dense sand are your best friends. A gorgeous bay with a rocky or weed-covered bottom presents a severe hazard. If your anchor can’t dig deep, you will drag, no matter how sheltered the bay looks on the chart.

High Cape and a forecast for Thunder over the mountains do not necessarily mean a Nevera will form. Yes, there is likely to be a thunder event, but this is most likely to be centred over the mountains of the mainland. You might be able to stay further out in outlying islands and avoid the thunder entirely, or enjoy the show from a distance.

3. The Golden Rule: Lines Out of the Water

Whether you get caught at sea or at anchor, do this immediately: Pull in every single trailing rope, sheet, and mooring line. If a loose line washes overboard and wraps around your propeller, you have instantly lost your engine. In a Nevera, your engine is your only lifeline. Without it, you are drifting helplessly toward the rocks. Clear the decks immediately.

4. Caught at Sea

If you are underway when the sky goes dark and the temperature plummets, shift into survival mode.

• Forget “Sea Room”: Textbooks tell you to run before the storm. In Croatia, charterers are usually limited to a 12-mile offshore limit, and the sea is an obstacle course of islands and reefs. You will run out of sea room fast.
• Hold Station: If you can’t outrun it, use geography to your advantage. Motor to the leeward (downwind) side of the highest nearby island. Keep the bow pointed into the wind and feather the throttle to hold your position. The water will stay relatively flat even if the wind is howling over the hills above you.
• Stow the Bimini: A bimini in 50 knots is a parachute which can violently tug at the boat causing damage or extra load on the anchor. Fold and strap it down. (Skipper’s Note: If you are sailing our Oceanis 41.1, ‘All Winds’, leave the sprayhood up! It is built to take the wind and will save the helmsman from being blinded by horizontal rain).

5. Caught at Anchor

You are in a bay. The white water is rushing toward the boat. You have about 30 seconds.

• Engine ON: Start the engine immediately. Do not wait for the wind to hit.
• Motor into the Load: Put the boat in forward gear and slowly motor directly into the wind. You aren’t trying to sail away; you are acting as a shock absorber to take the massive, snapping strain off your anchor chain and windlass.
• The “Slip and Run”: If your anchor pops out and you start dragging toward the rocks, do not try to pull up 50 meters of chain in a howling gale. Tie a fender to the bitter end of your chain, dump the whole thing overboard, and steer out of the bay into open water. You can come back and retrieve your tackle when the sun comes out.

6. Crew Leadership: Managing Anxiety

• Cockpit Only: The foredeck is completely off-limits. Get everyone into the cockpit, the deepest and safest part of the boat.
• Lifejackets & Tethers: Lifejackets go on. If you have jacklines, clip in. This completely removes the terrifying “man overboard” scenario from your mental load, allowing you to focus 100% on the helm.
• Manage the Nausea: Keep non-essential crew in the cockpit, tucked low behind the sprayhood, looking at the horizon. Sending a nervous guest into the saloon during a violent squall is a guaranteed recipe for severe seasickness.
• Give Them a Job: The temperature drop will make guests shiver, which amplifies panic. Distribute foul weather gear and assign a simple, focused task, like “keep your eyes on that catamaran to our port side.” Speak in a normal, low voice. If you look bored and in control, they will trust you.

The Instagram dream of windsurfing, kiting, or foiling from a cruising yacht into a perfect 20 knots of wind sounds like Nirvana. But if you’ve ever actually tried it, you know it’s not quite as straightforward as it seems.

Boats, heavy foil components, and massive windsurf rigs do not naturally mix. Launching a 120-litre slalom board or a kite off the stern of a swinging 45-foot yacht is a logistical challenge. If you want to seamlessly blend cruising with high-wind watersports, you just need a good system. Without one, you risk kinking your sails, denting your deck, or finding yourself drifting downwind of your only way home.

Here is how we make the dream actually work at All Winds.

1. Location and The Anchor Trust Factor

You can’t just drop the hook anywhere the wind is blowing. You really need one of two setups:

• The Beachside Marina: The easiest option. Find a marina physically right next to a launch beach. The yacht is safely tied up, there are no dinghy logistics, and you just walk the gear over. Good examples of this setup are Maccinaggio in Corsica, San Vincenzo and Cecina in Tuscany or Vieste in Appulia.
• The Protected but Windy Anchorage: It sounds like a contradiction, but that is exactly what us wind junkies are looking for! If you want to launch directly from the boat, look for a headland, land spit, or lagoon where the anchorage is protected from the sea swell (so the boat isn’t rolling violently, the chop is flattened and you won’t have shock loads on your anchor), but clean wind still blows across the water. Pantera on Dugi Otok in Croatia during the off-season is perfect for this, as is Vasiliki in Greece.

Apps like Windy can be great for this. By zooming in, you can actually see the topography of the area you are looking at and with the different model comparisons it’s possible to get a good idea of what you can expect along with swell and how it might affect your chosen anchorage.

The Anchor Reality Check: Do not underestimate the risk of leaving your yacht unattended in high winds. If you are on a charter boat with questionable ground tackle, do not leave the boat to its own devices in 25+ knots of wind. Launching directly from the boat requires absolute trust in your anchor. If you don’t have that trust, head to a marina. (18 to 20 knots is enough for most wind sports, and for a decent anchor with a good amount of chain out and a snubber, it is manageable. Don’t go in stronger winds until you have your system dialled in at 15 to 20 knots! Remember, when the wind speed doubles, the wind resistance quadruples and the sea state will start shock loading your anchor!)

2. The Tetris Game: Storing Gear

You have to be creative—and careful—about storage.

• Kitesurfing: Easily the most boat-friendly. Most kite gear is highly compressible and fits easily into a standard cockpit locker or a spare cabin.
• Wing Foiling: Small wing boards might fit in a deep locker or be tied securely in the dinghy on deck. However, foil components are heavy hazards. While carbon is sharp, aluminium foil masts and fuselages are incredibly dense. Dropping an aluminium fuselage will instantly crack your gelcoat. They need dedicated, padded protection.
• Windsurfing: This is the biggest logistical challenge. Small wave boards (<100L) can usually be manoeuvred below deck. Larger gear, like a 120-litre slalom board, simply won’t fit down a companionway. Unless you have a catamaran with a trampoline, large boards must go on deck—usually in heavy-duty quiver bags strapped securely to the guardrails, rigged so they cannot be washed overboard or damage the stanchions.

3. The Swim Platform Setup

Rigging on grass is easy. Rigging on the back of a boat requires the right boat geometry, good technique and a solid system. The ideal setup is an open rear cockpit with a large, flat, fold-down swim platform. (Note: On a very large yacht of 50+ feet, you can sometimes rig on the foredeck. But on a typical 40-foot cruiser, you will be fighting the mast, shrouds, and anchor windlass.)

• Winging: Modern swim platforms are great for inflating wings and assembling foils. Just keep an eye on your hardware—dropping a foil screw through the teak deck grating into the ocean ruins your session before it begins.
• Windsurfing (The In-Water Trick): Rigging larger sails on the back of a boat requires care to avoid kinking the monofilm. Keep the sail rolled up as you carefully slide the mast up. Crucially, ensure the two-piece mast is pushed completely together at the ferrule. If there is a gap, the mast will snap the second you apply downhaul tension. Once the mast is secure, drop the rig into the water. Sit on the swim platform, tension the downhaul while the sail is floating alongside, attach the boom, connect the board, and start directly from the stern.
• Kitesurfing: Ideally, take the dinghy to the beach to rig. If you have to prep on the boat, you can carefully walk the lines up the side deck, around the forestay, and back down to untangle them, or you can float the bar downwind in the water to separate the lines.

4. Launching and Landing

Because the boat is anchored facing directly into the wind, the hull, sprayhood, and bimini create a massive dead zone of turbulent air directly behind the swim platform.

• The Launch: You cannot launch a kite directly behind the boat. You have to drift the lines and the kite well out to the side, completely clear of the wind shadow. If you are windsurfing on a low-volume sinker board, attempting a beach start directly off the swim platform is tricky—you’ll have zero wind power in your sail until you drift backwards and clear the stern.
• Getting Back Aboard: Approaching a fibreglass yacht in 25 knots of wind can be intimidating. Slow right down as you approach the transom and drop the sail, kite, or wing just as you make contact. Alternatively, if you want a softer target, tie a floating line to a fender and trail it 10 to 15 meters off the stern. Aim for the fender, grab the line, drop your gear, and pull yourself in.

5. The Golden Rule: Stay Upwind

When you launch from a beach, you can afford to do the “walk of shame” downwind. When you launch from a boat, downwind might be the far side of a shallow lagoon, a rocky lee shore, or the open ocean. Always stay upwind of the boat. If the wind suddenly drops or you break gear, you must be able to drift or slowly paddle downwind back to your own swim platform.

6. The Dinghy Rescue

Having the dinghy ready is a good idea, but try to rescue someone against 20+ knots of wind in a tiny inflatable dinghy with a 2.2HP outboard, and you’ll quickly realise its limits. Here is the reality of most charter tenders: those little outboards usually don’t have a neutral gear (the prop just stops at idle), and they definitely don’t have reverse. Combine that with a flat-bottomed dinghy that blows across the water like a leaf, and they are actually way more difficult to manoeuvre in a blow than a proper RIB with a 10HP engine.

If a rescue is necessary:

• Always approach a person in the water from downwind.
• Keep the propeller away from the person and the gear. Since you likely don’t have a true neutral, hit the kill switch before trying to make physical contact.
• If you are picking up a kiter, pull the lines aboard before restarting the outboard so you don’t stall the engine when you need it most.

7. “Skipper” Off the Boat

While you might often do this in calm conditions to go for a walk, a coffee or dinner ashore, doing this to go and do some windsports is by its nature a different kettle of fish. Conditions that allow for good windsports automatically put extra stress on your ground tackle by their nature. If you are the legally designated skipper, remember: you are still the skipper, even if you are a mile away strapped to your kite. While the rest of the crew might enjoy watching the session, if there is any doubt in your mind about the boat dragging its anchor, you need to stay close enough to act immediately, or simply skip the session.

8. The Pack-Down

The fastest way to ruin a cruising yacht’s interior is to drag wet, sandy gear down the companionway. But here is the biggest misconception: Do not waste your precious freshwater budget rinsing your sails and kites. Fresh water packed away in a dark locker breeds mildew; salt water does not. If your gear is used regularly in salt water, it doesn’t need a fresh rinse.

• The Real Enemy is Sand: Sand scratches carbon, monofilm, and gelcoat. Give your gear a quick wash in the ocean to get the sand off before bringing it aboard.
• Zip Maintenance: Make sure there is no heavy salt residue jamming your board bag zippers. Keep them clean and well-lubricated.
• Let everything air-dry in the cockpit before it gets packed away.

We don’t like to leave gear tied to the stern of the boat overnight; it’s a prop wrap waiting to happen if the anchor drags overnight or you have to move for some unforeseen reason. Derig and store the gear when you’re finished to reduce the risk of something going pear-shaped overnight.

The Payoff

Blending windsports with cruising isn’t always easy, and the logistics are rarely as glamorous as the social media reels make them look. It requires discipline, good storage planning, and absolute trust in your ground tackle.

But when you get the system right—when you drop the hook in a perfectly protected bay, rig your gear without a hitch, and step off your own swim platform into 25 knots of clean wind miles away from the crowded beaches—there is absolutely nothing else like it in the world. It is the ultimate freedom.

The marine electronics industry loves to sell us peace of mind in little plastic boxes. We strap them to our lifejackets, check the blinking green battery lights, and tell ourselves that if everything goes wrong, pushing a button will summon a helicopter. (If you are within range!)

But out on a rolling sea in the pitch black, things are rarely that simple.

For years running Swiss Alpine Adventure, we preached the “holy trinity” of off-piste skiing: a transceiver, shovel, and probe. It is a no-brainer because every skier knows the mountain rescue helicopter will arrive too late. Your survival depends entirely on “companion rescue”—your friends finding you in minutes.

Yet, when we step onto a yacht, that logic vanishes. We happily drop thousands on chartplotters but hesitate over a personal beacon, assuming “institutional rescue” (the Coast Guard) will magically appear. But falling overboard at 2:00 AM is no different than getting buried in an avalanche. Your best chance of survival isn’t a helicopter; it’s the people you left behind on the boat. When purchasing our own devices, this is the thought that made me stop thinking and actually buy them.

If you walk into a chandlery today to buy a personal rescue beacon, you will be hit with an alphabet soup of acronyms: PLB, AIS-MOB, DSC, EPIRB. Buying the wrong one for your specific crew dynamic could mean you are screaming for help when no one is listening.

Whether you are preparing your own boat or packing your kit bag for a bareboat charter, here is the pragmatic guide to electronic lifesavers.

1. The Ultimate Rule: Don’t Lose Connection

Your Primary Life Support: Your brain and your grip. “One hand for the boat, one hand for yourself.” Keep your centre of gravity low, move carefully, and do not fall in.

Your Secondary Life Support: Your tether. Clipping on is frequently overlooked, but if things go wrong, it is what might keep you from becoming a search-and-rescue statistic.

• The Tether Problem: Standard tethers have a fatal flaw. If you fall over the side while the boat is doing 6 knots, being towed face down will drown you. We use the TeamO BackTow lifejacket, which you can release to tow you safely on your back, buying your crew critical time to stop the boat.

Autopilot Remotes: While marketing might suggest that some advanced autopilot remote control systems can turn the boat head-to-wind if you go overboard, these systems are rarely used on cruising boats—they are usually the territory of short-handed offshore racers. Even if you have one, the reality is that you are unlikely to be able to swim after a drifting, 45-foot yacht in a swell. If your physical connection to the boat is broken, you are in a desperate survival situation.

2. The Harsh Reality of Rescue Beacons

Rescue beacons are not magic bullets. They require you to actually have the device on your person, and in certain cases, you must be conscious to manually activate it.

To understand the stakes, look at two real-world extremes:

The Success (The Vendée Globe 2020): When Kevin Escoffier’s IMOCA 60 PRB snapped in half and sank in seconds in the Southern Ocean, his 406MHz EPIRB alerted Race Direction 8,000 miles away. His local AIS beacon helped fellow racer Jean Le Cam get to the right grid square. But in 5-meter waves and darkness, Le Cam still lost sight of him for hours. What ultimately allowed Le Cam to make the physical pickup? He saw the flashing light on Escoffier’s liferaft. Electronics bring the cavalry to the postcode; visual aids and seamanship finish the job.

The Tragedy (The ARC Transatlantic 2024): In December 2024, a highly experienced sailor went overboard from a Volvo 70 in 25-30 knots of wind mid-Atlantic. He was reportedly wearing an auto-inflating lifejacket equipped with a personal AIS beacon. Despite an immediate search by his crew and nearby yachts, he was never found.

Electronics give you a fighting chance, but they do not guarantee a rescue. Here is how to choose the right tool for the fight.

3. The Charter Boat Blindspot

Before you spend €400+ on an AIS-MOB, you need to understand that many charter boats do not have AIS receivers, or they are turned off!

When we were test-sailing our own yacht, All Winds, before buying her, the AIS was turned off and wasn’t even working properly when we switched it on. Over the years, we’ve even had to sneakily dive into the settings on bareboat charters to activate the AIS for night passages.

If you fall off a boat with no AIS receiver, your personal AIS beacon is transmitting to a blank screen. Your personal safety is only as good as the mother ship’s receiving equipment or another boat with AIS being close enough to help.

4. AIS-MOB Coding: How the Tech Actually Works

There is a massive misconception that you need to program your boat’s MMSI into an AIS beacon so your chartplotter recognises it. That is not how the technology works.

• AIS is Hardcoded: Every personal AIS-MOB device is hardcoded at the factory with an MMSI that begins with 972. You cannot change this. 972 is the international code for “Person in the water.” When a chartplotter receives a 972 signal, it overrides normal display rules, sounds an alarm, and drops a red circle with an ‘X’ on the screen. (Incidentally, if you see an MMSI number on the AIS beginning with “974”, it is an EPIRB).
• DSC is Programmable: Devices like the Ocean Signal MOB1 or MOB2 also feature DSC (Digital Selective Calling). This is where you program your mother ship’s MMSI. When activated, the device uses the DSC radio frequency to call your specific boat and trigger an ear-piercing alarm on your VHF radio to wake up the crew.
• The Second-Hand Warning (Class M Compliance): A new law enacted in January 2025 requires Personal AISs to be “Class M” compliant, which means they must have both a DSC sender and receiver. This plays a big role if you plan on buying a second-hand Personal AIS that may no longer meet the current legal standard.

5. The Big Misconception: The PLB3 Trade-off

If you have the budget, you might look at the top-tier Ocean Signal RescueME PLB3 and think: “It combines Satellite (406MHz) and AIS. I’ll buy that; it does everything!”

I recently spent time on the phone directly with Ocean Signal technical support, and here is the hard truth: The PLB3 does NOT have DSC. Because it packs so much satellite tech into a tiny package, you sacrifice the ability to trigger that closed-loop VHF alarm on your mother ship. It will call the Coast Guard via satellite, and it will put your 972 target on the chartplotter via AIS, but it will not set off your boat’s VHF radio alarm.

The Administrative Nightmare (A Real-World Warning): PLBs operate on global satellite networks, meaning they are hardcoded to specific country codes. If you buy a device abroad, you must get it factory-reprogrammed before you can legally register it in your home country. (in many countries it is a legal requirement to register your PLB)

When my own PLB3 arrived, I called the Swiss distributor to get it reprogrammed. Incredibly, they had no idea about the country coding rules and told me they couldn’t do it. I ended up having to inform the national distributor that they needed to take a factory training course just to be able to legally reprogram my device! (this was in the process of being corrected at the time of writing) Don’t leave your beacon admin to the day before you cast off.

The Pragmatic Workaround: If you buy a PLB abroad and it arrives hardcoded to a foreign country just days before you cast off, you don’t have to sail unprotected. The global Cospas-Sarsat system routes alerts based on the beacon’s embedded country code, not your passport. As a temporary fix, you can legally register the device on that specific country’s national database (e.g., the French CNES registry if it has a French code) using your actual emergency contact details. If activated, the alert simply routes to that country’s MRCC first, who will verify the emergency and immediately pass the coordination to the local Coast Guard sector you are floating in. It adds a minor administrative hop, but it gets you off the dock safely until you can get the device factory-reprogrammed at home.

6. Garmin inReach and similar devices

The Garmin inReach & Satellite Messenger Disclaimer It is worth addressing devices like the Garmin inReach, as many sailors wonder if they can replace a dedicated personal rescue beacon. While the inReach is a fantastic piece of kit, it is a Satellite Messenger, not a purpose-built MOB survival tool.

Yes, it has a dedicated SOS button, but that is where the similarities end.

• Activation & Ergonomics: It cannot be automated. To get a signal out, you have to physically hold the device up out of the water to maintain a view of the satellites.
• Durability: While it is water-resistant (typically IPX7, meaning 1 meter for 30 minutes), it is not built for prolonged immersion in a heavy sea state.
• Transmission Power: An inReach transmits at roughly 1.5 watts on the commercial Iridium network. A true PLB blasts a 5-watt signal on the dedicated Cospas-Sarsat military/SAR network.
• No Local Rescue: Crucially, an inReach has no AIS component. It cannot alert the boat you just fell off.

Where the inReach actually shines is two-way communication. If you are in a liferaft or dealing with a dismasting, being able to text rescue services the specific details of your emergency (or reassure your family) is invaluable. Keep it in your grab bag, use it to pull localised weather forecasts or text a shore-based router, but do not clip it to your lifejacket expecting it to be your primary man-overboard beacon.

7. The Unvarnished PLB vs AIS Buying Guide: Which One Do You Need?

Most articles stop at the tech specs. But at All Winds Adventures, we look at the human element. The beacon you buy should depend entirely on the crew you sail with.

Scenario A: The Solo Sailor or Remote Cruiser

You need a PLB or the hybrid PLB3. If you fall off, your boat is sailing away without you. There is no one at the helm to look at the chartplotter. You need the global Coast Guard.

Scenario B: The Fully Crewed Boat in Busy Waters

If you are racing in the Solent or chartering with six competent mates in the Med, get an AIS-MOB with DSC (like the MOB1 or MOB2). If you fall in, it sets off the VHF alarm, your crew sees your exact 972 location on the screen, and they come get you now, rather than waiting for a helicopter.

Scenario C: The Cruising Couple (Mixing Experience Levels)

This is the most common scenario we see: a couple sailing together where one person has more experience handling emergencies single-handed. Even if both sailors are highly competent (like my partner Karin, who routinely takes solo night watches), we still recommend mixing your technology.

The more experienced person wears the PLB3: If they fall in, the person left aboard may be overwhelmed trying to manage the boat and execute a recovery single-handed in rough weather. The PLB3 ensures the Cospas-Sarsat satellite network is immediately alerting the MRCC to coordinate a rescue, taking that massive burden off the person left aboard, while simultaneously putting the AIS target on the screen for passing traffic. You should, however, be aware that there is no DSC alert sent to local boats.

The less experienced sailor wears the AIS-MOB (with DSC): If they fall in, the DSC alarm wakes the more experienced skipper up. The skipper has the skills to track the 972 target on the plotter, execute a quick-stop manoeuvre, and pull off a textbook MOB recovery alone.

The Bottom Line: Gear Doesn’t Replace Drills

The most expensive beacon in the world is utterly useless if the person left on board doesn’t know how to heave-to, mark a waypoint, or throw a throwing line, or if you have not thought about how you might recover an unresponsive, incapacitated or exhausted person from the water.

You cannot buy competence in a chandlery.

Because countries like the UK and Ireland don’t legally require a licence to sail for pleasure, the RYA system focuses entirely on practical survival rather than state legislation. You can complete the practical course in just one week on the water. Mediterranean charter bases trust it implicitly, and the vast majority will happily hand over the keys if you hold it.

The Insider Hack: If you are already a highly experienced sailor who just lacks the formal paperwork, you might not even need a week. Depending on your nationality and residency, you can often book a 1-day direct practical assessment at an RYA or Irish Sailing centre to get your ICC instantly.

But here is the truth bomb: The Day Skipper is brilliant, but it’s basically a “Learner’s Permit.” A piece of paper doesn’t keep you safe in a 35-knot squall, and the industry knows it.

If you are chartering in France, the base manager will often care far more about your actual sailing resume than whatever certificate you are holding. In Ireland, they might barely glance at your paperwork at all; instead, they’ll step aboard with you for a practical “check-out” to see if you can actually moor the boat without panicking. If you buy your own boat, marine insurance underwriters will often look right past your certificates and ask for your logbook. A ticket gets you in the door; demonstrated competence gets you the boat.

The International Alternative: IYT Alongside the RYA sits the IYT (International Yacht Training). If the RYA is the historic British standard, the Canadian-born IYT is its highly modular, globally accessible peer. Like the RYA, the IYT philosophy is fundamentally practical and operates in multiple languages worldwide. Holding an IYT International Bareboat Skipper ticket proves to a charter base manager exactly what an RYA Day Skipper does: that you haven’t just memorised the ColRegs, you have actually parked a boat in a crosswind. Crucially, both organisations can issue you the universally accepted ICC (if eligible).

2. The State Exam Trap & The Swiss Mileage Paradox

If you live in Switzerland or Germany, you are pushed toward state-mandated systems like the Hochseeausweis or SBF/SKS. I have massive respect for anyone who passes these—the theory is incredibly demanding.

But they have a fatal flaw: they value academic box-ticking over demonstrated competence.

To see how absurd this gets, look at my situation. I learned to sail in the Atlantic swells of Ireland, passed my Yachtmaster in Portugal, and sail the tidal waters of Brittany. Yet, under the Swiss system, I would struggle to qualify for a Hochseeausweis.

Why? Because the Swiss require you to log your 1,000 miles as crew. If I log miles where I am actually the skipper taking the responsibility for making the decisions, they don’t count. You are forced to be a passenger. The RYA, by contrast, absolutely demands that you log miles in command before taking higher exams.

3. The ICC and “Resolution 40”

Online forums will tell you: “Just get an ICC (International Certificate of Competence), and you’ll be fine.”

But a pragmatic piece of legislation called UNECE Resolution 40 complicates this. The rule is simple: A country can only issue an ICC to its own citizens or residents. * The Stumbling Block: If you are a Swiss resident who goes to Greece and passes an RYA Day Skipper, the UK cannot issue your ICC. Switzerland also won’t issue a Swiss ICC based on a UK ticket. You are stuck in a bureaucratic loop.

• The Workaround: Don’t panic. You often don’t need the physical ICC. Countries like Croatia publish official lists of accepted international licenses. The RYA Day Skipper is on that list, bypassing the need for an ICC entirely.
• The Expat Hack: If you are an expat living in a Resolution 40 country, you can often just apply to your home country’s governing body based on your old national tickets. That’s exactly how I got my Irish ICC while living in Switzerland!

4. The Hidden Gotcha: The VHF Radio Licence

You have your skipper ticket. But if you don’t have a valid Short Range Certificate (SRC) for the VHF radio, countries like Croatia will not let the boat leave the dock. Do not overlook this tiny piece of paper!

5. The Reality on the Ground (An Insider Secret)

Here is an industry secret: the port police are not marching down the docks checking wallets. The real test happens weeks before you pack your bags.

When you book a yacht, the charter company requires your license number for the official crew list. If you submit a ticket that they don’t recognise, the online booking simply stops. It’s usually not an issue on the pontoon as it’s taken care of in advance in the paperwork.

The Atlantic Reality: Competence Over Paper

If you want absolute proof that a state-issued piece of paper does not make a seaman, look at the western fringes of Europe. France, the UK, and Ireland boast some of the most exposed waters, treacherous coastlines, and strongest tides on the planet.

Yet, in all three of these maritime heavyweights, you do not need a mandatory state license to sail a pleasure yacht at sea. Take France as the ultimate example. The French dominate offshore racing and ocean cruising, and sailing along the coast of Brittany is as culturally normal as walking. If you try to charter a yacht in France, the base manager often won’t ask for a state license—they will ask for a “CV Nautique” (a Sailing Resume) detailing your actual time on the water or even just a chat on the dock.

These nations produce elite sailors because their systems rely entirely on a culture of lived competence, early practical immersion, and generational knowledge, rather than state-mandated classroom hours. It is the ultimate proof of the reality we teach: The Atlantic Ocean does not care what certificates you have in your dry bag. It only cares if you know what you are doing.

Getting our Beneteau Oceanis 41.1, All Winds, ready for her first season here in Croatia was destined to involve a few unexpected delays. While we have been busy trying to get off the dock and get our own “Sailbatical” started, the universe decided to balance out our stress by giving us a wonderfully surprising chance encounter.

It all started when the downwind sail, which was discussed as part of our purchase contract, fell through. In despair, we put out a call on social media to see if anyone in the sailing community had a suitable sail they were willing to sell.

Within a few minutes, we had a reply from someone in the exact same marina offering what seemed like a great solution. Philipp and Beate had just purchased their Hallberg-Rassy 42, Albatros, and were preparing for their circumnavigation. Their blister was not the ideal downwind sail for their needs, but it seemed like it would suit “All Winds” perfectly.

A Pink Sail and a New Friendship

We arranged a meeting on the dock. As we pulled the sail out of its bag, we realised it was almost brand new and in Karin’s favourite colour for a downwind sail: pink! The deal was quickly done, and a lovely friendship developed.

What started as a quick transaction turned into hours of shared stories and inspiring conversations about the realities of life on the water. Philipp and Beate are incredibly passionate sailors. They are documenting their circumnavigation on their website, Blauwassergeschichten, through fantastic VLOGs and an interactive tracking map.

At the same time, they are writing a series of children’s books about their adventures. The books tell the story of a curious little seahorse discovering the world, beautifully depicting the journey through the eyes of their nieces and nephews back home in Germany: Eva, Elise, and Eliot. A few days after our meeting, we had the profound honour of standing on the dock to wave them off as they officially started their circumnavigation.

We won’t lie—watching their bow point towards the horizon while we are still wading through paperwork and waiting to start our own trip was a bittersweet moment. But honestly, keeping up with them has been a highlight of our days. Right now, we are happily sailing vicariously through their social media channels and the regular WhatsApp updates they send us of their progress. It is a beautiful reminder of why we love this community and exactly what is waiting for us out there once we finally cast off our own lines and hoist that pink sail.

There is an old marina joke about the three ultimate tests of a relationship: assembling flat-pack furniture, surviving the holidays with the in-laws, and docking a sailboat in a crosswind.

If you spend an afternoon sitting at a Mediterranean café, you will inevitably see the cliché play out. A charter yacht comes reversing in too hot. The “Skipper” (usually the man) is glued to the helm, shouting contradictory distances over the roar of the diesel engine. Meanwhile, the crew stands on the bow with a roving fender, looking stressed and terrified of doing the wrong thing.

It is a terrible dynamic. When a docking manoeuvre devolves into shouting, it is almost never the fault of the person holding the mooring line. It is a failure of leadership, preparation, and delegation by the person holding the wheel.

I know this because I have been that exact skipper, and I have made that exact mess.

The Spectator Café Disaster

Years before All Winds, Karin and I took our first charter holiday together. I had been a qualified sailing and powerboat instructor back in the 90s and early 2000s. However, handling a bulky charter yacht in tight quarters in an unfamiliar marina as a couple was a completely different beast.

Our very first docking manoeuvre happened at Marina di Scarlino in Tuscany. We were coming stern-to onto a finger berth with a nasty crosswind. Because the boat had no bow thruster, I knew the moment we lost forward momentum, the bow was going to blow off violently. I tried to communicate this reality before we committed to the move, but my briefing was clearly inadequate.

I got the boat into the slip reasonably well, stopped our momentum, and asked Karin to get the line on the bow. Then… nothing happened.

What followed was pure panic. I literally jumped over the helm station, sprinted forward, grabbed both the bow and stern lines at the same time, and wrestled the boat fast to the cleats. I nearly fell into the water in the process. It was a chaotic, ugly recovery, performed directly in front of a café full of spectators.

The frosty words afterwards, and my own intense disappointment in myself for botching the manoeuvre, forced some serious introspection. How could we do this better?

Couples Cruising: Breaking the Vicious Cycle at the Helm

When a skipper gets scared or messes up a manoeuvre, human nature dictates that they retreat to where they feel safest: the helm. They hoard the wheel because it gives them an illusion of control.

This creates a vicious cycle. The “Skipper” gets 100% of the driving practice, and the partner gets relegated to the role of a permanent, nervous deckhand. Consequently, the skills gap widens, resentment builds, and the boat becomes reliant on a single point of failure.

For couples cruising together, this is a massive, life-threatening problem. What happens if that “Skipper” goes overboard?

The Pressure Cooker: Hidden Nerves and Pride

If one partner is visibly nervous on the bow, the reality is that the person on the helm is probably just as nervous. However, they feel compelled by pride to hide it. Because they are not entirely comfortable themselves, they overcompensate and micromanage. When the stress peaks, they vent those hidden nerves onto their partner.

Taking your nerves out on your crew is the fastest way to ensure that the boat ends up on the brokerage market by the end of the season.

Home Truths: You Don’t Have to Drive

In many countries, you legally need someone on board with a specific certificate. That person holds the ultimate legal responsibility for the vessel. But being the responsible person does not mean you have to be the person doing everything.

A good skipper delegates. There is a catch, though: To be comfortable delegating a task, you must be incredibly comfortable doing it yourself. You cannot clearly explain to a partner how to lasso a cleat if you don’t deeply understand it yourself. Furthermore, you cannot explain why a boat has no steerage in reverse until it’s moving, or how a heavy throttle hand creates massive prop walk, unless you have mastered those concepts.

The Slime Line Stereotype: Brains Over Brawn

If you want to see this vicious cycle in action, watch a boat doing a stern-to Mediterranean mooring with lazy lines (slime lines). The stereotype is painfully common. The man is glued to the helm. The woman is wrestling with a heavily tensioned mooring line, screaming that she isn’t strong enough to pull the bow of a 15-ton yacht against the wind. The skipper simply shouts, “Just pull harder!”

There are two very simple ways to solve this.

• Solution 1: Swap Roles. Put the heavier, stronger person on the bow to haul the wet lines, and put the partner on the helm to drive the boat.
• Solution 2: Use the Engine, Not Your Back. You have a powerful diesel engine under your feet. Use it to do the heavy lifting!

Here is the All Winds method for stress-free slime lines:

1. The Long Stern: Fix your stern lines first, but let them slip so the boat is sitting further out of the slip than you ultimately want to be.
2. Neutral is Critical: As the crew lifts the slime line from the stern to walk it forward, put the engine in neutral to avoid a catastrophic prop wrap.
3. Power Forward: Once the crew is at the bow with the line, gently engage forward gear, motoring against your stern lines. The boat will hold itself in place.
4. Zero-Tension Cleating: Because the engine is holding the boat, the crew just has to take up the slack and drop the slime line onto the bow cleat. Absolutely zero heavy pulling required.
5. The “OXO” Trust Hack: If the crew is terrified they will tie a bad cleating hitch, don’t shout. Ask them to do an “OXO” (a full turn and figure eights, followed by another full turn). This creates enough friction to hold the boat safely without a locking hitch.
6. Power Reverse: Before you shift into reverse to tighten the stern lines, the skipper can calmly walk to the bow and put the final locking hitch on themselves. Once the bow is locked off properly, walk back to the helm, power astern, pull the stern lines tight, and make them fast.

The Power of Play

The real breakthrough for Karin and me didn’t come from rigid drills. It came from playing.

We started turning manoeuvres into low-stress games. If we were at anchor and the wind was right, we would start the engine as a backup, hoist the sail, and practice sailing off the anchor. Crucially, Karin was on the helm for that first attempt, not me.

When we leave a marina, I will often throw a fender overboard (when it’s safe to do so), point at it, and say, “That’s me in the water. What are you going to do?”

Because we built actual, mutual trust, the payoff was massive. When we did our first night passage from Italy to Corsica, I took the darkest watch to make the experience as enjoyable and low-stress for her as possible. But she still took a solo watch while I slept in the cockpit. Today, she anchors the boat while I work the bow, and can completely manage the vessel without me for a night watch.

The Myth of Perfection

Whether it stems from a cultural expectation that demands flawless execution or just pure, stubborn ego, we have to accept one fundamental truth: On the water, perfect does not exist.

We are playing in nature, and things will go wrong. The goal of a competent skipper isn’t to execute a flawless, brochure-ready manoeuvre every time. The goal is catastrophe management. Catch the small mistake early enough to ensure no one gets injured, and nothing gets broken. If the bow blows off, you abort, reset, and try again.

Own It and Move On

When a manoeuvre does go wrong, own it. Do not pass the blame to the partner holding the line. Stand up, take the failure on your own shoulders, and look for the lesson. Nobody has made it through life, or across an ocean, without making mistakes.

The true mark of a great couples cruising partnership isn’t that you never mess up. It is the ability to recognise the failure, learn how to prevent it next time, put it down to experience, and move on.

Let go of the wheel. Build your partner up. Work together, not against each other. Wash the salt off the deck, drop the gangway, and go enjoy that apéro.

There is no worse sound on a bareboat charter holiday than the engine suddenly choking and dying as you reverse into a tight marina berth. The sea is unpredictable; equipment breaks, and as humans, we all make mistakes. I’ve spent 40 years on and around the water, and I can promise you that no skipper is perfect.

Even elite offshore professionals screw up. Look at the last Ocean Race: Charlie Enright’s 11th Hour Racing team suffered a massive, hull-crushing collision with Guyot environnement right at the start of the final leg. But they didn’t fall apart. They managed the immediate catastrophe, bounced back, and actually went on to win the entire global event. Elite sailors make mistakes. The difference isn’t that they are perfect; the difference is how they keep a mistake from becoming a disaster, and how they bounce back afterwards.

Whether you are sailing on a Swiss lake or navigating a 45-foot catamaran in Croatia, here is how you handle the chaos when things go wrong on the water.

1. Recognise “The Chain of Disaster”

Disasters are rarely one single event. They are almost always a chain reaction. The equation can often look something like this:

Minor Error + Fatigue + Rushing + Bad Weather = Catastrophe.

Let’s look at a highly realistic bareboat charter example:

• The crew is tired after a long sail and leaves the cockpit a tangled mess of lazy sheets.
• As you motor into a crowded marina in a crosswind, a sheet or a trailing mooring line fall into the water.
• The prop sucks it up and stops the engine dead.
• You have no propulsion, no steering, and you are drifting sideways into a million-Euro superyacht.
• Crash.

The strategy as a skipper is to catch the “Links” early. Prevention is better than cure. This means keeping a tidy “shipshape” cockpit and doing your safety briefings to tell the crew what to do before the drama starts.

2. The PAME Method: Always Have an Escape Route

I learned this acronym on an RYA Powerboat Instructor course back in the late 90s, and it has saved my bacon more times than I can count. Before you commit to any tight docking or complex boat handling, run through the acronym PAME:

• P – Plan: What is the exact goal? (e.g., Docking stern-to on the windward pontoon).
• A – Approach: How are we getting there? What are the wind and tide doing?
• M – Manouvre: The actual execution of the plan.
• E – Escape: This is the most critical step. If a gust hits or the engine fails halfway through the manoeuvre, how do we bail out safely?

If you don’t have an Escape route, do not start the Approach.

3. Hit the “Reset Button”

When chaos hits, panic is the enemy. Panic causes tunnel vision, making the world shrink and making it very easy to miss something critical.

Let’s go back to 11th Hour Racing: On the wall of their cockpit, they literally had half a red tennis ball glued to the bulkhead. That was the team’s physical “Reset Button.” When things went sideways, they physically hit it to break the hypnosis of panic.

STOP, BREATHE, THINK.

Follow this cycle to regain control:

• Stop: Take your hands off the wheel, put the engine in neutral, or heave-to.
• Crew Welfare: Is everyone ok?
• Calm: Stay calm yourself—don’t make the situation worse with your own emotion. No shouting!
• Assess: What is actually wrong? Get feedback from your crew.
• Plan: Communicate the fix to the team.

Always remember your priorities:

1: People (Lives & Injuries)
2: Hull (Keeping the water out)
3: Rig & Engine (Propulsion)

4. Buy Yourself Time

If you are overwhelmed, you need to buy time. The ultimate way to press “Pause” on a sailing yacht is to Heave-to. Assuming you have the sea room, heaving-to stops the motion, flattens the boat, and allows you to make coffee and think.

5. Real-World Scenario: The Prop Wrap

Let’s say the nightmare happens: the engine just stopped dead because of a wrapped line.

1. Immediate Action: Put the gear into NEUTRAL immediately. Do not try to restart it, you risk either making it worse or damaging the sail drive.
2. Assess: Are we in immediate danger from rocks or other boats?
3. Plan: Can we sail out of it? (Plan A). Should we drop the anchor to buy time and stop the drift? (Plan B). Or do we need to dive to clear it? (Plan C—Only if safe, engine off, keys in your pocket, spotter on deck).

The Bottom Line

Sh!t happens. There is often no definite right or wrong answer. You have to draw on your toolbox of skills. Prepare well, clear the cockpit, use the PAME framework, and when the chaos hits: hit the Reset Button.
