There is an old marina joke about the three ultimate tests of a relationship: assembling flat-pack furniture, surviving the holidays with the in-laws, and docking a sailboat in a crosswind.

If you spend an afternoon sitting at a Mediterranean café, you will inevitably see the cliché play out. A charter yacht comes reversing in too hot. The “Skipper” (usually the man) is glued to the helm, shouting contradictory distances over the roar of the diesel engine. Meanwhile, the crew stands on the bow with a roving fender, looking stressed and terrified of doing the wrong thing.

It is a terrible dynamic. When a docking manoeuvre devolves into shouting, it is almost never the fault of the person holding the mooring line. It is a failure of leadership, preparation, and delegation by the person holding the wheel.

I know this because I have been that exact skipper, and I have made that exact mess.

The Spectator Café Disaster

Years before All Winds, Karin and I took our first charter holiday together. I had been a qualified sailing and powerboat instructor back in the 90s and early 2000s. However, handling a bulky charter yacht in tight quarters in an unfamiliar marina as a couple was a completely different beast.

Our very first docking manoeuvre happened at Marina di Scarlino in Tuscany. We were coming stern-to onto a finger berth with a nasty crosswind. Because the boat had no bow thruster, I knew the moment we lost forward momentum, the bow was going to blow off violently. I tried to communicate this reality before we committed to the move, but my briefing was clearly inadequate.

I got the boat into the slip reasonably well, stopped our momentum, and asked Karin to get the line on the bow. Then… nothing happened.

What followed was pure panic. I literally jumped over the helm station, sprinted forward, grabbed both the bow and stern lines at the same time, and wrestled the boat fast to the cleats. I nearly fell into the water in the process. It was a chaotic, ugly recovery, performed directly in front of a café full of spectators.

The frosty words afterwards, and my own intense disappointment in myself for botching the manoeuvre, forced some serious introspection. How could we do this better?

Couples Cruising: Breaking the Vicious Cycle at the Helm

When a skipper gets scared or messes up a manoeuvre, human nature dictates that they retreat to where they feel safest: the helm. They hoard the wheel because it gives them an illusion of control.

This creates a vicious cycle. The “Skipper” gets 100% of the driving practice, and the partner gets relegated to the role of a permanent, nervous deckhand. Consequently, the skills gap widens, resentment builds, and the boat becomes reliant on a single point of failure.

For couples cruising together, this is a massive, life-threatening problem. What happens if that “Skipper” goes overboard?

The Pressure Cooker: Hidden Nerves and Pride

If one partner is visibly nervous on the bow, the reality is that the person on the helm is probably just as nervous. However, they feel compelled by pride to hide it. Because they are not entirely comfortable themselves, they overcompensate and micromanage. When the stress peaks, they vent those hidden nerves onto their partner.

Taking your nerves out on your crew is the fastest way to ensure that the boat ends up on the brokerage market by the end of the season.

Home Truths: You Don’t Have to Drive

In many countries, you legally need someone on board with a specific certificate. That person holds the ultimate legal responsibility for the vessel. But being the responsible person does not mean you have to be the person doing everything.

A good skipper delegates. There is a catch, though: To be comfortable delegating a task, you must be incredibly comfortable doing it yourself. You cannot clearly explain to a partner how to lasso a cleat if you don’t deeply understand it yourself. Furthermore, you cannot explain why a boat has no steerage in reverse until it’s moving, or how a heavy throttle hand creates massive prop walk, unless you have mastered those concepts.

The Slime Line Stereotype: Brains Over Brawn

If you want to see this vicious cycle in action, watch a boat doing a stern-to Mediterranean mooring with lazy lines (slime lines). The stereotype is painfully common. The man is glued to the helm. The woman is wrestling with a heavily tensioned mooring line, screaming that she isn’t strong enough to pull the bow of a 15-ton yacht against the wind. The skipper simply shouts, “Just pull harder!”

There are two very simple ways to solve this.

• Solution 1: Swap Roles. Put the heavier, stronger person on the bow to haul the wet lines, and put the partner on the helm to drive the boat.
• Solution 2: Use the Engine, Not Your Back. You have a powerful diesel engine under your feet. Use it to do the heavy lifting!

Here is the All Winds method for stress-free slime lines:

1. The Long Stern: Fix your stern lines first, but let them slip so the boat is sitting further out of the slip than you ultimately want to be.
2. Neutral is Critical: As the crew lifts the slime line from the stern to walk it forward, put the engine in neutral to avoid a catastrophic prop wrap.
3. Power Forward: Once the crew is at the bow with the line, gently engage forward gear, motoring against your stern lines. The boat will hold itself in place.
4. Zero-Tension Cleating: Because the engine is holding the boat, the crew just has to take up the slack and drop the slime line onto the bow cleat. Absolutely zero heavy pulling required.
5. The “OXO” Trust Hack: If the crew is terrified they will tie a bad cleating hitch, don’t shout. Ask them to do an “OXO” (a full turn and figure eights, followed by another full turn). This creates enough friction to hold the boat safely without a locking hitch.
6. Power Reverse: Before you shift into reverse to tighten the stern lines, the skipper can calmly walk to the bow and put the final locking hitch on themselves. Once the bow is locked off properly, walk back to the helm, power astern, pull the stern lines tight, and make them fast.

The Power of Play

The real breakthrough for Karin and me didn’t come from rigid drills. It came from playing.

We started turning manoeuvres into low-stress games. If we were at anchor and the wind was right, we would start the engine as a backup, hoist the sail, and practice sailing off the anchor. Crucially, Karin was on the helm for that first attempt, not me.

When we leave a marina, I will often throw a fender overboard (when it’s safe to do so), point at it, and say, “That’s me in the water. What are you going to do?”

Because we built actual, mutual trust, the payoff was massive. When we did our first night passage from Italy to Corsica, I took the darkest watch to make the experience as enjoyable and low-stress for her as possible. But she still took a solo watch while I slept in the cockpit. Today, she anchors the boat while I work the bow, and can completely manage the vessel without me for a night watch.

The Myth of Perfection

Whether it stems from a cultural expectation that demands flawless execution or just pure, stubborn ego, we have to accept one fundamental truth: On the water, perfect does not exist.

We are playing in nature, and things will go wrong. The goal of a competent skipper isn’t to execute a flawless, brochure-ready manoeuvre every time. The goal is catastrophe management. Catch the small mistake early enough to ensure no one gets injured, and nothing gets broken. If the bow blows off, you abort, reset, and try again.

Own It and Move On

When a manoeuvre does go wrong, own it. Do not pass the blame to the partner holding the line. Stand up, take the failure on your own shoulders, and look for the lesson. Nobody has made it through life, or across an ocean, without making mistakes.

The true mark of a great couples cruising partnership isn’t that you never mess up. It is the ability to recognise the failure, learn how to prevent it next time, put it down to experience, and move on.

Let go of the wheel. Build your partner up. Work together, not against each other. Wash the salt off the deck, drop the gangway, and go enjoy that apéro.

The sea is unpredictable; equipment breaks, and as humans, we all make mistakes. I’ve spent 40 years on and around the water, and I can promise you that no skipper is perfect.

Even elite offshore professionals screw up. Look at the last Ocean Race: Charlie Enright’s 11th Hour Racing team suffered a massive, hull-crushing collision with Guyot environnement right at the start of the final leg. But they didn’t fall apart. They managed the immediate catastrophe, bounced back, and actually went on to win the entire global event. Elite sailors make mistakes. The difference isn’t that they are perfect; the difference is how they keep a mistake from becoming a disaster, and how they bounce back afterwards.

Whether you are sailing on a Swiss lake or navigating a 45-foot catamaran in Croatia, here is how you handle the chaos when things go wrong on the water.

1. Recognise “The Chain of Disaster”

Disasters are rarely one single event. They are almost always a chain reaction. The equation can often look something like this:

Minor Error + Fatigue + Rushing + Bad Weather = Catastrophe.

Let’s look at a highly realistic bareboat charter example:

• The crew is tired after a long sail and leaves the cockpit a tangled mess of lazy sheets.
• As you motor into a crowded marina in a crosswind, a sheet or a trailing mooring line fall into the water.
• The prop sucks it up and stops the engine dead.
• You have no propulsion, no steering, and you are drifting sideways into a million-Euro superyacht.
• Crash.

The strategy as a skipper is to catch the “Links” early. Prevention is better than cure. This means keeping a tidy “shipshape” cockpit and doing your safety briefings to tell the crew what to do before the drama starts.

2. The PAME Method: Always Have an Escape Route

I learned this acronym on an RYA Powerboat Instructor course back in the late 90s, and it has saved my bacon more times than I can count. Before you commit to any tight docking or complex boat handling, run through the acronym PAME:

• P – Plan: What is the exact goal? (e.g., Docking stern-to on the windward pontoon).
• A – Approach: How are we getting there? What are the wind and tide doing?
• M – Manouvre: The actual execution of the plan.
• E – Escape: This is the most critical step. If a gust hits or the engine fails halfway through the manoeuvre, how do we bail out safely?

If you don’t have an Escape route, do not start the Approach.

3. Hit the “Reset Button”

When chaos hits, panic is the enemy. Panic causes tunnel vision, making the world shrink and making it very easy to miss something critical.

Let’s go back to 11th Hour Racing: On the wall of their cockpit, they literally had half a red tennis ball glued to the bulkhead. That was the team’s physical “Reset Button.” When things went sideways, they physically hit it to break the hypnosis of panic.

STOP, BREATHE, THINK.

Follow this cycle to regain control:

• Stop: Take your hands off the wheel, put the engine in neutral, or heave-to.
• Crew Welfare: Is everyone ok?
• Calm: Stay calm yourself—don’t make the situation worse with your own emotion. No shouting!
• Assess: What is actually wrong? Get feedback from your crew.
• Plan: Communicate the fix to the team.

Always remember your priorities:

1: People (Lives & Injuries)
2: Hull (Keeping the water out)
3: Rig & Engine (Propulsion)

4. Buy Yourself Time

If you are overwhelmed, you need to buy time. The ultimate way to press “Pause” on a sailing yacht is to Heave-to. Assuming you have the sea room, heaving-to stops the motion, flattens the boat, and allows you to make coffee and think.

5. Real-World Scenario: The Prop Wrap

Let’s say the nightmare happens: the engine just stopped dead because of a wrapped line.

1. Immediate Action: Put the gear into NEUTRAL immediately. Do not try to restart it, you risk either making it worse or damaging the sail drive.
2. Assess: Are we in immediate danger from rocks or other boats?
3. Plan: Can we sail out of it? (Plan A). Should we drop the anchor to buy time and stop the drift? (Plan B). Or do we need to dive to clear it? (Plan C—Only if safe, engine off, keys in your pocket, spotter on deck).

The Bottom Line

Sh!t happens. There is often no definite right or wrong answer. You have to draw on your toolbox of skills. Prepare well, clear the cockpit, use the PAME framework, and when the chaos hits: hit the Reset Button.

I recently jumped into the water fully kitted out for a Sea Survival Course. There is nothing quite like the reassurance of feeling your life jacket inflate instantly when you hit the water. But after the course, I had a job to do: re-arm and repack my jacket. It’s not that complicated to service your life jacket, but if you are unsure about doing it yourself, it is best to bring it to a professional who will do it for you.

While I was servicing my deployed jacket, I decided to inspect my partner Karin’s jacket. It had been sitting in the locker and looked brand new. What I found was a perfect example of why you can’t trust a jacket based on looks alone.

While my jacket needed service because I fired it, Karin’s needed service because it had silently expired. Here is exactly what we found and how you can perform these checks at home. We are using the TeamO Ocean 275 and Offshore 170 Back Tow Life Jackets.

1. The CO₂ Cylinder: The Weight Test

The green indicator clip isn’t enough. You must unscrew the cylinder and weigh it. I had two cylinders to compare: the empty one from my course, and the “full” one from storage.

How to calculate the weight

Every cylinder has the Gross Weight (cylinder + gas) stamped on the metal body. You need a precise digital kitchen scale.

• The Deployed Cylinder (Fail): We weighed the used 60g cylinder. The stamp said 236.53g, but the scale read 175g. That missing 61g is the CO₂ gas that kept me afloat.
• The Stored Cylinder (Pass): On the other jacket, we removed the 38g cylinder. The stamp read 149.24g, and the scale showed 149g. This is within the safe tolerance (usually +/- 2g).

The Rule: If the weight on the scales is significantly lower than the stamped weight, the gas has escaped. Replace it immediately.

2. The “Hidden” Expiry Dates

This was the big catch on the stored jacket. Most modern life jackets use an auto-hydrostatic release or a chemical firing bobbin (like the UML Pro-Sensor).

Check the Firing Mechanism

These mechanisms contain a chemical element that degrades over time, even in dry storage.

• Our Finding: The firing unit on Karin’s jacket was stamped 12/2023. It was strictly out of date and potentially unsafe, despite never touching the water.

Check the Safety Light

Don’t forget the peripherals.

• Our Finding: Our safety light was dated 06/2026. While it technically had 6 months left, it wasn’t functioning correctly. Since we were ordering a re-arm kit, we replaced the light to start the season with a clean slate.

3. The 24-Hour Leak Test

Checking the mechanics is only half the battle; you must ensure the bladder holds air.

The “No Mouth” Rule

Important: Never use your mouth to orally inflate a life jacket for a test. The moisture from your breath introduces bacteria and mildew into the lung of the jacket. Over time, this rots the fabric and seams from the inside out.

The Test Procedure

1. Open the jacket casing to reveal the yellow/orange bladder.
2. Use a hand pump (like a dinghy pump) attached to the oral inflation tube.
3. Inflate until firm (do not over-pressurise).
4. Leave it for 24 hours.

If the jacket is still firm the next day, it is airtight. If it has softened, you likely have a puncture or a leaky valve.

Reassemble, Pack, and Go Sailing

Once your jacket has passed all the tests, it’s time to get it ready for sea.

First, ensure all the air is completely out of the bladder. Squeeze it tightly while pressing the valve in the oral inflation tube; if any air remains, you will struggle to close the jacket.

Next, screw on the release mechanism and check the firing pin. Ensure the pin in the mechanism is retracted before you screw in the new CO₂ cylinder. If the pin is protruding, it will pierce the new bottle immediately, wasting the cylinder.

Once the firing mechanism and the CO₂ cylinder are screwed in, you should see two green indicators on the front of the housing holding the release bobbin and CO₂ cylinder. If either of these indicators are red, then you need to check the corresponding element that it is screwed in correctly or that it has not already been deployed.

Finally, flake the jacket lungs neatly behind the release mechanism and the oral inflation tube, attach your light (if replaced), and close up the outer casing (zipper or velcro).

Summary

Whether you’ve just pulled the cord on a survival course or your gear has been sitting all winter quietly, the pre-season maintenance rule is the same: Check the weight, check the date, and inflate.

It’s not that complicated to service your life jacket, but if you are unsure about doing it yourself, it is best to bring it to a professional who will do it for you.

A well-tuned autopilot is like having an extra hand on deck. It never gets tired, hungry, or seasick. However, it does consume power, so it’s vital to use it efficiently.

Many sailors simply press “Auto” and hope for the best. To truly sail efficiently and safely, you need to master your sailing autopilot modes relative to your point of sail and the sea state.

Whether you are fitting out your own vessel or chartering with All Winds Adventures, here is a guide to how your pilot thinks.

1. The Basics: Steering by Compass

The most fundamental autopilot relies on a Fluxgate Compass. This is found on everything from small day-sailors with tiller pilots to large yachts.

When engaged, it locks onto your current magnetic heading. It controls the tiller or wheel to keep the bow pointing in that direction.

• The Pro: It is simple, reliable, and fits almost any boat.
• The Con: It is blind to the elements. If the wind shifts 20 degrees, the boat keeps going straight. Your sails will eventually luff or stall.

The Reality: You must constantly monitor the wind. You have to manually adjust the course to keep the sails happy. Furthermore, simple tiller pilots lack power; they are best used only in benign conditions.

2. The Upgrade: Steer to Apparent Wind

Modern charter boats (and well-equipped private vessels) use integrated systems. These networks connect the instruments to the Chart Plotter or Multi-function Displays (MFDs).

If your system feeds wind data from the masthead unit into the network (like NMEA2000 or Raymarine Seatalk), you unlock a powerful feature: Apparent Wind Mode.

This is a game-changer once the sails are up. The boat can now “see” the wind. As the wind gusts, lulls, or shifts, the pilot steers to keep the telltales flying perfectly. Instead of steering a compass heading (e.g., 270° West), the pilot steers to a specific wind angle (e.g., 45° off the starboard bow).

• The Benefit: This is freedom. If the wind gradually shifts, the boat alters course to follow it. This keeps your sails efficient and your speed high.
• The Watch-out: You are no longer sailing a straight line on the map. You must navigate carefully. Ensure a wind shift doesn’t push you into shallow water or a shipping lane.

3. The Advanced Setup: Steering to True Wind

To unlock the “Holy Trinity” of pilot options, you need one more data point: Speed Through Water.

If your boat has a working speed transducer (Log), the system’s brain can calculate the True Wind. This allows the pilot to steer based on the actual wind direction, regardless of boat speed.

So, which mode should you use?

The Cheatsheet: Which Mode for Which Moment?

Here is the protocol we use at All Winds Adventures to ensure safety and performance.

Scenario A: Motoring or Motor-Sailing

Mode: Compass / Heading Hold. When sails are down, or you are punching through a calm, aerodynamic efficiency doesn’t matter. You want the shortest distance between two points. Set the pilot to a compass heading that maintains your desired Course Over Ground (COG).

Scenario B: Upwind & Reaching (Apparent Wind < 90°)

Mode: Apparent Wind When sailing close-hauled or on a beam reach, your speed usually remains steady. Steer to Apparent Wind. This ensures the boat hugs the “groove” perfectly. If the wind lifts you, the pilot follows; if it heads you, the pilot bears away to keep the sails full.

Scenario C: Downwind (True Wind > 130°)

Mode: True Wind When sailing deeper than 130 degrees, or when the sails go into “Push” mode, use True Wind Mode.

We have done this intuitively for years. Pip Hare, of Vendée Globe fame, wrote an article recommending this exact strategy some years ago. While her article discusses advanced racing systems, the physics apply to everyone.

The Downwind Danger: Why “Apparent” Fails in Waves

Why shouldn’t you use Apparent Wind when sailing downwind? It comes down to physics.

1. Imagine you are sailing downwind. A large wave picks up the stern.
2. The boat surfs and accelerates rapidly.
3. As boat speed increases, the Apparent Wind physically shifts forward (towards the bow).
4. If the pilot is in Apparent Wind Mode, it detects this shift. It thinks the boat is turning too far upwind.
5. To “correct” this, the pilot bears away (steers away from the wind).

The Risk: By bearing away while accelerating down a wave, the pilot can steer you into an accidental Gybe.

This dynamic causes broaches and ripped sails on IMOCA 60s in the Ocean Race. However, you don’t need a carbon fibre racing machine for this to happen. The physics are identical on a standard cruising yacht.

The Solution: Use True Wind Mode. The autopilot will ignore the temporary wind shift caused by surfing. It holds the course relative to the actual wind, preventing a dangerous gybe.

A Note on Safety

Remember: The Pilot is only an aid to navigation. Do not trust it blindly.

You must still keep a lookout and avoid traffic, reefs, and headlands. Always be ready to jump to the helm and hit “Standby.”

I learned this lesson the hard way 30 years ago off the west coast of Ireland. We were sailing double-handed. My crew-mate was asleep, and I felt peckish. I checked the horizon, saw it was clear, and went below to make a sandwich.

Within seconds, the pilot gave up the ghost. The boat tacked aggressively. By the time I scrambled back to the helm, the jib was backed, and we were threatening to gybe. I regained control just in time to save the rig. I had to wait for my crew-mate to wake up before I finally got that sandwich!

How to “Scale” Your Expectations

How do you know if a 46-foot boat feels like the 38-foot version you read about? Larger boats are naturally more stable due to their weight. However, a boat’s “soul” depends on technical ratios.

The SA/D Index: Your Performance Compass

For those who prioritise sailing, look for the Sail Area-to-Displacement (SA/D) ratio in the specs:

• Under 15: Often under-sailed. Expect to motor in light winds.
• 16–18: The “sweet spot” for modern cruising.
• 20+: High-performance (like an RM or Pogo). Expect higher loads and active sailing.

As you scale up—for example, from a Sun Odyssey 410 to a 440—waterline length adds speed. However, check that the sail area increases with the weight. If it doesn’t, the larger boat may feel “slower” in light air than its smaller sibling.

Size Matters: Crew Comfort vs. Handling

Size influences two major factors: Space and Load.

• Small Crews (Couples): A boat in the 34 to 41-foot range is often perfect. It offers luxury without becoming a chore to manage in a marina.
• Two Couples or 4–6 Friends: Aim for 38 to 43 feet. This ensures everyone has “breathing room” and storage.
• Large Families: Boats over 45 feet or Catamarans are best for larger parties.

Pro Tip: Never fill a boat to its absolute maximum capacity. A 41-foot boat may sleep eight, but we recommend a limit of 4 to 5 people. This ensures everyone has a cabin and enough storage for a comfortable holiday.

Technical Specs: Handling the Rig

Pay close attention to the sail plan. It dramatically affects your daily experience:

• Fully Battened with Slab Reefing: Best for performance. It offers more sail area and better tuning.
• Roller Furling Mainsail: Offers easy reefing from the cockpit. It is great for small or less experienced crews.
• Self-Tacking Jibs: These make tacking effortless. They are ideal if your group isn’t active in sailing. However, you do sacrifice some sail area.
• Autonomy: If you love secluded bays, prioritise solar panels and large water tanks (500L+).

Real-World Case Studies: Our Honest Reviews

We have personally tested these models in various conditions. Here is our take:

Bavaria Cruiser Series (34, 41 & C38)

Cruiser 34 & 41: These are exceptionally stable with a comfortable motion. They have a “classic” hull shape that handles choppy seas smoothly.

Bavaria C38: A modern style with hull “chines.” While it has good form stability, the self-tacking jib version can feel under-sailed.

Beneteau Oceanis Series (35.1 & 41.1)

Oceanis 35.1: Very easy to handle in marinas. It is perfect for a couple’s getaway but can feel “light” under sail.

Oceanis 41.1: A significant step up. We’ve seen speeds over 10 knots on this boat.

When the idea for this chapter first began to take shape, we had just moved to a small Swiss village called Allenwinden, which, quite fittingly, translates as “All Winds.”

Tips for a Stress-Free and Enjoyable Adventure

When we learn to sail, many of us dream of the day we’ll cast off the lines, feel the wind fill the sails, and head off into the sunset — leaving our daily worries behind. Sailing simplifies life; it brings everything back to the here and now.

But when it comes to your first yacht charter, that dream can feel a little daunting. How do you prepare? What can you expect? And how do you make sure it’s an unforgettable experience for all the right reasons?

At All Winds Adventures, we’ve been where you are — from first-time charter nerves to full-circle sailing adventures in Croatia and Majorca. This guide brings together practical advice, personal experience, and the calm confidence that turns your first bareboat charter into a truly enjoyable adventure.

Do your research in advance

As with most things in sailing, preparation is key. Before my first charter, I spent evenings poring over charts and cruising guides for the region. I used Google Maps to get familiar with the coastline, downloaded electronic charts for my tablet, and refreshed some old-school chartwork skills.

I even followed the local weather forecasts for weeks in advance — planning imaginary routes as if I were already there.

That research meant that when the week came, I already knew the lie of the land (and sea), where to find shelter if the weather changed, and what kind of distances made sense for a day’s sail.

Tip: Start familiarising yourself with the area you plan to sail weeks in advance. Learn local weather patterns, entry points, and possible anchorages.

Choose the Right Time to Charter

If you’re planning your first yacht charter, timing can make or break your experience.

Avoid July and August if possible — that’s high season in the Mediterranean. Marinas are crowded, anchorages packed, and you’ll often need to reserve berths in advance. It can quickly turn a relaxing sailing holiday into a stressful race for space.

Instead, plan your first sailing week in spring or autumn. The weather is often just as good, the marinas are quieter, and you’ll have the freedom to adapt your plan day by day — which is what true adventure is all about.

Get time on the water beforehand

Confidence comes from experience — and experience starts small.

Before heading off on a larger yacht, spend time sailing smaller boats where you live. Practice reefing, mooring, and coming alongside under different wind conditions.

Get there early

Your holiday starts long before you cast off the lines.

Arriving early at the charter base lets you familiarise yourself with the marina, check out the local facilities, and — most importantly — relax before your check-in.

A calm skipper makes a good impression with the base staff, and that helps everything go smoother.

One option, ff available, book an early check-in. You’ll be ahead of the queue for the technical walkthrough and can possibly even take the boat out for a short sail that first afternoon. Coming back into a familiar berth builds confidence for the days ahead.

What to expect at check-in

You will get a time in advance to check in at the base. But you might be able to take care of the paperwork at the office before your official check-in time. Once the paperwork is done, the base staff will usually do the technical check-in as soon as your boat is ready.

You will have decided what extras you are taking in advance and you will have to pay for these at the beginning of the charter. Extras might include the following:

• Charter Pack (also known as Final Cleaning or Starter Pack and is usually compulsory.)
• Outboard Motor for dinghy
• Insurance
• Car parking in the Marina
• Bedding
• Cockpit cushions
• SUP

Sometimes the Charter Pack/Starter Pack includes some of the other options, but others don’t. Read carefully in advance what is included and what is extra.

I personally believe it’s worth paying for the extra insurance/damage waiver if the charter company will give it to you. In some cases, they will only allow you to have the damage waiver (which in most cases only reduces your deposit) if they deem you to have had enough previous experience. Some companies sell a complete damage waiver (zero deposit) covering any damage to the boat, but usually, the waiver just reduces your damage deposit (and thus damage liability).

All your extras are charged to your credit card at check-in. Following this, they will put a hold on your card for the amount of the damage deposit. The safe return of the boat with no damage will result in this hold being removed from your card.

Technical Check-in

When your boat is ready, one of the base staff will do a complete walk-through of the boat with you. Usually, it’s just the skipper and maybe one other person who are on the boat for this. This part of the check-in is very important. Topics covered include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Start/Stop Engine
• Engine Battery/House Battery Master Switches
• Sea Cocks
• Gas shut off
• Life Jackets
• Life Raft
• Emergency Rudder
• Electrical Panel
• Toilet/Black Water Tank
• Water
• Diesel
• Engine oil check, spares
• Reefing Systems

There might be a full inventory taken of the boat at this point, which you will be expected to sign. In light winds, some companies will pull out the sails to check those. If you spot any damage or notice anything missing, this is the time to point this out. Any damage not mentioned in the protocol could be attributed to you when you bring the boat back.

Get Ready to Go

After the administrative and technical check-in, you can start to put your luggage on board and the holiday can begin. Many stay the first night in the home port and leave the following morning, but if you have done an early check-in it might be nice to go for a short sail and return to your dock. It is possible to leave and sail to another location after the check-in, but you will be arriving quite late and end up having to do your first mooring in a potentially crowded marina quite late in the day.

Leaving the dock

In the Mediterranean, most of the charter boats moor stern-to on the dock. If possible try to leave the dock for the first time when the wind is light. I suggest going to a quiet corner of the Marina to familiarise yourself with how the boat handles in close quarters at this point before doing anything else. Familiarising yourself with the boat at this stage will make your manoeuvres much less stressful later.

Practising close quarters, coming alongside and coming to a dock stern-to at the start of the Charter will give you an idea of any idiosyncrasies your boat may have. It also gives you a chance to explain to the new crew what their roles will be when doing the manoeuvres for real later on.

Bear in mind that wind can make getting in and out of your spot on the dock very difficult. Take time to think of your plan in advance and also think of what your options are if something goes wrong. It only takes a split second for the bow to be blown off the wind when you cast off the windward stern line. This situation can be compounded if you were to suddenly back up while the stern line is still in the water or use the bow thruster while someone is still holding onto one of the bowlines.

The first sail

Try to plan your first sail as quite a short one. On our first charter, we were lucky our boat was kept on a finger-berth rather than squeezed between other charter boats. This allowed us to leave, go for a short sail and return again after we finished the check-in without too much stress. The Marinas in Italy almost all have staff on hand who you can radio as you enter the harbour to come and help you with your lines as you arrive back in.

If sailing to a new harbour for your first sail, make it a short one and arrive there early. The earlier you get in, the fewer other boats you will have to deal with and the less chance that the first time you dock will be in a tight space. An early arrival allows you and your crew the chance to have a more relaxed first experience with docking in a new marina.

If you have done your research, it should be easy to pick out a location for the first sail. In high season, you will almost certainly have to try and reserve a berth at the marina you are heading to in advance.

Follow the forecast

It’s good to keep a careful eye on the forecast for later in the week already at the very beginning. Most week-long charters really only involve 6 days of actual sailing. Unless you leave for your first sail directly after the check-in. It’s easy to sail a long way from the charter base in the first 4 days of the charter to suddenly realise that you now need to make up all that ground back upwind in 2 days on the way back. Keep an eye on the weather and plan to get back to your starting point comfortably on the last day.

Returning the boat

Most charters run Saturday to Saturday, but boats usually need to be back at the base by Friday at 5 p.m. You’ll spend the final night on board before disembarking the next morning.

Before returning, fill your fuel tank and empty the black water tanks. Take note of the fuel dock layout when you leave on day one — it’ll make the return far easier.

Once refuelled, radio the marina or phone the base manager and ask for help with lines when docking. The staff are always happy to assist, and it ensures a smooth finish to your week.
